Take a good stock of business cards with you or use an electronic business card. When you speak to somebody, take their card and write notes on the back so you don’t forget who was who.
Listen to the person you are talking with and ask questions about their business. Follow up by suggesting a one to one meeting whether or not they could use your services because there is power in building your network and they know people who could use your services.
Be conscious of your body language when you are talking. Maintain eye contact, respect personal space – be aware that in the UK it’s better to maintain a polite distance between you rather than be close when you are speaking to other people.
Dress to impress. Wear comfortable but smart clothing that makes a first good impression.
Articulate your services and target audience clearly that your fellow networkers know what to look for when you are seeing new referrals.
